Enrollment Process
ENROLLMENT
Denver Language School is a DPS charter school. DLS participates in the School Choice process managed by DPS. By completing an application, your child is entered into the lottery for the upcoming school year. The application is not a guarantee of admission and does not commit your child to attending DLS.
Kindergarten students must be 5 years old on or before October 1, 2024, in order to qualify for the 2024-25 school year. The state of Colorado now provides full tuition for Kindergarten students. More information is provided on the DPS Website.
Round 1 of the DPS School Choice process for the 2024-25 school year opens
January 11 at 10am and closes February 12 at 4pm.
Round 2 of the DPS School Choice process for the 2024-25 school year will open mid-April 2024. For mid-year transfers, email: Enrollment@denverlanguageschool.org
To apply to DLS you must fill out a School Choice application. The Round 1 window will be open Mid-January through Mid-February.
School Choice Round 1 results for the 2024-25 school year will be released to families in late March 2023. To access your student's results, you will log into the School Mint account you created to apply.
You DO need to fill out a school choice form for any siblings that wish to attend DLS next year and aren't currently enrolled at DLS. OR, if you are planning to leave DLS and move to another school within DPS (this includes transitioning 8th graders moving to 9th grade in the 2024-25 school year).
When enrollment offers are made, families will be contacted by the DLS Enrollment Team via email.
Wait lists do not carry over from year to year. Families must reapply each year if they are not selected from the current lottery or called from the current wait list during the school year they applied for.
Students wishing to continue at DLS do not need to apply through school choice. All currently enrolled students will automatically be enrolled in the 2024-2025 school year.
DLS Language Proficiency Assessments
Students applying for grades 2 through 8 must take a Language Proficiency Assessment and demonstrate grade-level fluency in the chosen target language to be eligible for admission. When Round 1 waitlists are released in late March, we will contact the first five students for each grade/ program and coordinate an assessment time. We will continue this process until each grade has reached capacity. Please provide the most accurate contact information on your application so we may contact you to coordinate an assessment time if the opportunity arises.
Mid-year applicants for any grade level will also be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Though it is preferred, you do not need to take the assessment before applying to DLS through School Choice.
For Spanish, all incoming 2nd grade and up students take AVANT.
For Mandarin, only incoming 4th grade and up take AVANT. Second and third-grade students do in-person 1:1 assessments with one of our Instructional Leadership Team Members.
If you want to learn more about the Avant STAMP assessment, please visithttps://avantassessment.com/stamp. Avant STAMP 4SE (for Elementary) or 4S (for Middle School) measures learners' language proficiency in listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Each language skill is tested separately; each session takes approximately 25-35 minutes. There is a 5–10-minute break scheduled between sessions. Avant STAMP 4SE and 4 S assessments are computer-based and are graded by the vendors with inter-rater reliability training. The LPA team reviews the results sent back from AVANT (approximately 2-3 days) and determines the eligibility of prospective students accordingly.
